History of THE SOCIAL GROUP
In 1997 Englishman Andrew Haglington selected the word "socialising", shortened it to "social", and invented social networking!
The 'group of friends' Andrew started in South West England was an instant success.
DEVON SOCIAL GROUP was a sensation, with huge demand from people wanting to join.
And followed by CORNWALL SOCIAL GROUP, SOMERSET SOCIAL GROUP, BRISTOL SOCIAL GROUP, and SOCIAL GROUP HOLIDAYS, the social media revolution was underway!
In 2002, Andrew Haglington came up with the phrase "social enterprise". In 2003, the company Social Group Enterprises Ltd was set up by Andrew Haglington and Cathy Haglington as an independent social enterprise to run THE SOCIAL GROUP on a professional basis. The aim was to generate enough income to cover running costs and salaries, while doing good work in society by bringing people together to connect, interact, and socialise!
Over the years, the dedication and hard work of our expert team has made life better for so many - enabling thousands of people to have fun, make friends, and enjoy a great social life! While our invention of social networking has been widely copied and gone on to change the entire civilisation!
2012 Re-Launch
2012 has seen a re-launch of The Social Group, with the completion of the new web sites, new social media content, and a brand new style SOCIAL GROUP MAGAZINE.
This has brought a fresh energy and impetus, with lots of new people joining and lots of ex-members deciding they like what we have done so mcuh they think it is worth re-joining! It would appear that no-one wants to miss out on the new discount offers and the much improved choice of parties and weekend breaks!

In South West England, our Cornwall, Devon, Somerset, and Bristol areas of The Social Group have a dedicated team offering a regular programme of social events.
We run some events specifically aimed at 20's, 30's ages. We run some events specifically aimed at 40's, 50's, 60's ages. Other events have a mixed age group.
The Social Group offers a fabulous programme of events to suit single people and couples, to suit a range of tastes and pockets - in fact, there should be plenty for everyone!
We offer a huge choice of dining out, drinks, parties, balls, dances, entertainment, days out, BBQ's, treasure hunts, walks, outdoor activities, weekends, short breaks, and international holidays. What is on offer changes every week, every month, and every year, with all manner of enjoyable social events to enjoy, many of them personally hosted by our expert team.
There's lots of dining out, as everyone loves good company to go out to dinner with! We feature all kinds of dining out - including smart hotels, country pubs, fashionable wine bars, international cuisine, afternoon tea, scenic locations, and sophisticated fine dining. GROUP OF FRIENDS
In 1997 Andrew Haglington identified the need in society for a mechanism by which people could connect and interact. Andrew shortened the word "socialising" to "social", and called this "social networking". Andrew spent the next few years explaining to people what he meant by all things "social" - social networking, social media, social group, social event, and social enterprise - but at it's heart, what he set up was always intended to be a 'group of friends' that anyone could go out with and join in with.
In 1999, Cathy joined as a member of The Social Group and ended up marrying Andrew and developing the 'group of friends' concept with him, the couple setting up Social Group Enterprises Ltd. in 2002 in order to run the organisation on a professional and full time basis.
Since then, The Social Group has gone on to become a force for good in the community, enabling countless thousands to connect, network, make friends, and lead a better quality of life.
Having both a male and female perspective, we think, helps us offer a good balance of what both sexes are looking for, and with constant feedback from our members, we now offer a social life second to none!
BRINGING BACK THE GOOD TIMES!
Meeting people and getting talking doesn't have to be difficult. We offer a personal and hands-on professional approach that makes this quite different to anything else. When you join The Social Group, organisers Andrew & Cathy will make themselves known to you, so that you are put at your ease and already know two people to start off with. You will be able to see what they look like and talk to them in person on the telephone, so from the outset you feel you already have two friends. This makes joining The Social Group particularly easy. And with many years of experience, you'll know from the start your social life is in good hands!
We are not a dodgy dating agency, not a sad singles club, and not an extreme sports organisation - so there's no stigma and you won't be pushed into anything you don't want to do. We don't force you to hold events and we don't make you invite a bunch of strangers into your own home.

In 1997 Andrew Haglington invented social networking! These days, when you hear people talking about anything "social", that's all down to our managing director. Andrew Haglington was the first to think up and use the terms "social group", "social event", "social networking", & "social media" in the modern sense! The Social Group was the first to start all of this!
In the early days, we were just an informal 'group of friends', but things began to grow rapidly and our ideas about social networking soon spread around the planet, leading on to what happened in the USA and changing the entire civilisation. Social Group Enterprises Ltd. was set up as a "social enterprise" in March 2003 to run The Social Group in a professional capacity.
Our aims are to enable people to enjoy a better social life, and at the same time generate enough income to pay for the office, staff, etc. Over the years, the hard work of "social entrepreneurs" Andrew Haglington & Cathy Haglington has helped thousands of people to make friends & enjoy a better quality of life! The Social Group has changed the world!
Thank you to everyone who over the years has supported our efforts! You are all in our thoughts, and as many of you as possible will get a mention in the behind the scenes book we are writing, which has a working title of "THE MAN WHO INVENTED SOCIAL NETWORKING - THE STORY OF THE SOCIAL GROUP".
